Woods began playing golf before the age of two. He was introduced to the sport by his father, Earl.
Woods competed and won many amateur and age group golfing tournaments throughout his childhood and teenage years, and played golf throughout college.
In 1997, Woods won The Masters, becoming the youngest ever winner and the first African American to win.
Currently the world’s number one ranked golfer, Woods has won fourteen professional major golf championships, second only to Jack Nicklaus (who has won eighteen).
In 2009, Forbes announced that Woods was the first athlete to earn over a billion dollars (before taxes) in his career, through winnings and endorsements.
In 2004 Woods married Swedish model Elin Nordegren. The couple have two children together, a daughter, Sam, and a son, Charlie.
In 2009 it was revealed by various media outlets that Woods has had extramarital affairs with up to twelve women. Woods apologised shortly after that claims were made public, and announced an indefinite hiatus from professional golf.
