As a child Parker attended several specialised performing arts schools. As a teen she acted in several theatre productions.

Throughout the late eighties and early nineties, Parker acted in several well know films, including Hocus Pocus, Footloose, Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Mars Attacks! and The First Wives Club.

In 1998 Parker began her most famous role, as the author Carrie Bradshaw in the drama comedy Sex and the City. The show continued for six seasons. In 2004 Parker won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

After Sex and the City ended, Parker took on roles in several stage productions. She also reprised her role as Bradshaw in the two film versions of Sex and the City.

Parker had a seven year relationship with Robert Downey Jr, from 1984 until 2001. Parker married fellow actor Matthew Broderick in 1997. The couple have three children, James, born in 2002, and twins Marion and Tabitha, born in 2009 via a surrogate.
