Mary-Kate Olsen and her twin sister Ashley were born June 13, 1986 in California. Probably the most successful child stars of their generation, the sisters entered show business at an early age; appearing on television show Full House when they were just nine months old.

After they left Full House, the girls' image was heavily commercialised. They experienced massive popularity within the pre-teen market, and established their own company 'Dualstar' at the age of seven. They now own the company outright after buying out other shareholders in 2004. Dualstar's products include fashion lines, make up, numerous movies, toys and other merchandise.

After graduating high school, Mary-Kate briefly attended NYU before dropping out to concentrate on individual projects and work more closely with Dualstar, now a billion dollar brand. She has appeared in various independent films and is widely considered to be a fashion icon, having popularised the 'boho' image.

Rumours of eating disorders and drug use have plagued Mary Kate's adult life, and she entered rehab, severely anorexic, in 2004. Reports of drug addiction remain unfounded, but Mary Kate admits to being a heavy coffee drinker since the age of ten.

In 2008, she was connected to the death of Australian actor Heath Ledger after it surfaced that the housekeeper who found Ledger's body rang Olsen twice before contacting emergency services.
