In 1988 Carey met Tommy Mottola, a Columbia Records executive, at a party. She gave him a demo tape, and shortly after hearing it he gave her a recording contract.

Carey possesses a rare five-octave vocal range, and is considered one of the greatest pop vocalists of all time.

Carey has released nineteen albums in her career, which spans a twenty year period between 1990 and 2010, and has sold over 175 million records.

In 2000 Carey was named the best selling female pop artist of the millennium at the World Music Arwards.

Carey has tried her hand in acting, starring in several films, most of which have received negative reviews. However, her role in Precious, the 2009 film adaptation of the 1996 novel Push, was well received by critics.

In 2008 Carey married actor and comedian Nick Cannon, who is ten years her junior. They renewed their vows in 2010.
