In 1983, Michaels, along with three friends formed the band Paris. In 1984, the band moved to Los Angeles, changing their name to Poison.
The band first gained widespread success in 1987, when Michaels convinced the rest of the band to film a music video for one of their songs. Using music videos as promotional tools was not yet the status quo.
Poison’s most famous song, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" was inspired by Michaels’ breakup with his then girlfriend Tracy Lewis.
Although Poison was one of the most prominent hair metal bands during the 1980s and 1990s, there was constant tension between the band members, exacerbated by their respective drug addictions.
In July 2007, Michaels’ reality television show, Rock of Love, debuted. A dating competition series, the show has filmed three seasons.
On the 22nd of April 2010, Michaels was rushed to hospital with a bad headache. Doctors found that he had suffered a large subarachnoid haemorrhage. He was in a critical condition for several days, suffering a number of setbacks, but has made a full recovery.
