Scotty McCreery wins American Idol
Scotty McCreery was crowned winner of American Idol on Wednesday night (May 25, 2011)
In a star-studded finale the 17-year-old was picked above Lauren Alaina, 16, by the 122-million public voters.
Judges were Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson.
Scotty looked close to tears when host Ryan Seacrest announced the news.
"It's been a year since Lauren Alaina and I tried out now," said Scotty, from North Carolina.
"Me and her have been together since day one and we are going to stay together and this is just… never in my wildest dreams… I have to thank the lord first, he got me here," added the overwhelmed teen.
The programme featured performances from Lady Gaga, Bono, The Edge, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Judas Priest, Kirk Franklin, Jack Black, Tony Bennett, Carrie Underwood and Tom Jones.
The insanely popular TV talent contest brought in a world record number of votes for this final - 122 million in less than 24 hours.
Throughout the season they have amassed almost three quarters of a billion votes - the equivalent to two votes for every man woman and child living in America.
