Nigel Lythgoe addressed drop in ratings for American Idol's new season

American Idol boss Nigel Lythgoe has addressed the drop in ratings after the launch of the new season.

The US talent show recently returned for a new season with a new panel consisting of Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler as well as existing judge Randy Jackson.

The tenth season recently kicked off but the two-hour first episode was watched by 13 percent less viewers.

American Idol executive producer Lythgoe said he was happy with the ratings, he said to The Hollywood Reporter: "I am thrilled and delighted at the reaction to the new panel."

Lythgoe also promised viewers that there are talented contestants and told them to stick with the show.

He said: "Wait until the talent begins to surface. There will be more than one star this year."
