Mel Gibson agrees to pay ex-girlfriend $750,000

Mel Gibson has agreed to pay his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva just $750,000 under the terms of their court settlement – a year after she turned down an offer of $15m, according to reports.
The pair agreed the sum, which will be paid in three separate instalments, during a court hearing in Los Angeles, California, earlier today, in which they were awarded joint legal and physical custody of their young daughter Lucia.
The Mad Max star has also promised to pay Lucia the same inheritance that his other seven children are set to receive.
Under the terms of the settlement, Grigorieva and Lucia are allowed to remain in the Sherman Oaks house where they currently reside. When Lucia turns 18, the property will be sold and the money will be placed in a trust for her.
The settlement would appear to end a lengthy feud between the two, which made headlines across the world after Grigorieva accused the 55-year-old actor of attacking her – just three months after she had given birth to their daughter.
News of the alleged bust-up on 6 January last year did not emerge until last summer, when audio recordings of phone calls between the couple were leaked to the media, in which Gibson was famously heard ranting at his 41-year-old ex-girlfriend and unleashing a torrent of racist and sexist verbal threats.
He was subsequently charged with misdemeanor battery and was sentenced to three years’ probation and ordered to perform 16 hours of community service.
The settlement reached today states that the Braveheart star will pay his ex $750,000 – which is significantly less than the $15m offer Grigorieva is said to have turned down last year, according to reports.
He was also instructed to start a year-long domestic violence counselling programme and continue the psychological treatment he has been undergoing with his doctor.
In addition, Gibson was ordered to pay a $400 fine and told to maintain “peaceful contact” with Grigorieva. If he breaks the conditions of his probation, he faces one year behind bars in a county jail.
