Lady Gaga set to open the MTV VMAs

Pop superstar Lady Gaga is set to open this year's MTV Video Music Awards.

The 25-year-old announced she will kick off the show at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre by getting a group of fans to unveil a banner reading 'Gaga to open VMAs!!' outside the MTV studios in New York's Times Square yesterday.

As well as opening the show, Gaga, real name Stefani Germanotta, is expected to join a number of other artists in a musical tribute to Britney Spears.

The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards is set to take place on August 28.
