Katy Perry, Adele big winners at MTV awards

Katy Perry and Adele were big winners but pregnant Beyonce and Lady Gaga in drag stole the show at the MTV Video Music Awards last night.

Beyonce, 29, made headlines before the show even got started with a surprise announcement

that she and Jay-Z are about to become a mummy and daddy.

Lady Gaga then took to the stage to open the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre performing her hit single You and I in character as her male alter-ego Jo Calderone.

The pop star stepped out on to the dark, empty stage wearing a loose black suit and T-shirt with slicked-back dark hair with a lit cigarette.

As Calderone, Gaga started into an emotional monologue about his tortured relationship with the pop star. "Lady Gaga, she left me," he said. "She said it always starts out good but she said I'm just like the last one."

As the performance was coming to an end Queen guitarist Brian May joined Gaga on stage with a guitar solo while Gaga climbed on top of the piano and sprayed beer on the crowd.

Katy Perry was joined on stage by Kanye West for best collaboration for E.T. and later earned the top prize video of the year with her triumphant song and video for Firework. Her tally for the night was three Moon Men, having also collected a minor trophy for special effects with E.T.

Adele, whos performance was one of the highlights of the evening, was shut out of the top awards but picked up three awards in the minor categories of art direction, cinematography, and editing.

Other awards went to Justin Bieber for best male video with U Smile, and Tyler, The Creator took home the Moon Man for best new artist with Yonkers.
