Actress Kate Bosworth has revealed that filming a rape scene for new movie Straw Dogs felt "incredibly violating and terrifying".
In the remake of the 1971 psychological thriller, Bosworth’s character Amy is raped by her former lover Charlie, played by Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård, who later became her boyfriend in real life before their recent split.
The Wonderland star says that although she told her co-star not to hold back as he performed the violent on-screen sex assault, it left her feeling genuinely traumatised.
“I told Alex not to worry about me, to just go for it,” she says in an interview with BlackBook Magazine.
“I said, 'I need you to lose yourself in this moment'. And it was actually violent.
“He’s a huge guy. When he was ripping off my clothes in front of a room filled with men, even though I knew it was make-believe, it was still incredibly violating and terrifying.”
She added: "The panic you see flooding me in that rape scene is real."
Even though they had yet to start dating off-screen, Bosworth says she already felt comfortable enough with Skarsgård to allow him to film such a brutal scene.
“Alex is so kind and so dedicated and so incredibly professional,” she says. “He’s got this rare, wonderful control and stillness that you notice in a lot of old movie stars.
"He looks you in the eye. I feel incredibly lucky to have had that type of man on this movie.”
