J.Lo and Steve Tyler launch new season of American Idol

The new season of American Idol kicked off in spectacular style with new judges Jennifer Lopez and Steve Tyler making and breaking dreams of stardom.

Wednesday night's two-hour premiere saw a never-ending flurry of contestants from New York and New Jersey try their luck with the new panel, which also includes old favourite Randy Jackson.

A total of 125,000 people - more than ever before - have auditioned throughout season 10 in the hope of becoming the country's newest superstar, with many travelling across the country and camping out for days.

And in their quest for a golden ticket to Hollywood, they queued up for hours on end for their one big shot.

"This is some of the best talent we've ever seen and most fun we've ever had," presenter Ryan Seacrest told viewers at the opening of Fox's extravaganza.
